Fountain "Cosmos" adorned the center of Barnaul in 1978, striking the imagination of the townspeople with light and music streams. An outlandish design was developed by a team of engineers from the Altai Scientific Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering Technology (ANITIM). The details of the fountain were made in Moscow, delivered by rail, assembled by local craftsmen.

The illumination and musical accompaniment of the working fountain disappeared rather quickly - they say they interfered with the residents of neighboring houses. But even without special effects, it remains the largest and most expressive of the 25 fountains of the regional capital.

The cosmic motive of urban design, popular in the 20th century, is especially close to the Altai Territory - the homeland of the second cosmonaut of the planet German Titov and the place of landing after the flight into space of Valentina Tereshkova. The designers of the Ob Boulevard (which, according to the general plan, was supposed to start from here, from the former Internationalists Square), united both fountains in the city center with the symbolism of space. The bottom of the rectangular bowl of the horizontal fountain - closest to Lenin Avenue - is lined with a thematic mosaic.
