Okladnikova Cave

Altai region

This cave bears the name of the Siberian archaeologist Alexei Okladnikov. In 1984, his disciples found the remains of our distant ancestors, the Neanderthals, in the Altai rocks.

Thanks to the discovery of the Novosibirsk people, scientists were able to compare the fragments of skeletons found in different parts of the continent. A group of scientists from the Institute in Leipzig examined the bones of Neanderthals from the Uzbek cave Teshik-Tash, found by Okladnikov in the 1930s, and burials from the Paleolithic times in Altai, discovered by his students half a century later. So it was established that the Neanderthals settled over a vast territory and the Altai cave, named after Okladnikov, is the most eastern point of their residence.

You can enter the cave from the south side, but first you need to climb 14 meters above the level of the river. The eyes of travelers will see a complex of cavities interconnected by galleries - grottoes, halls and niches in the depths of the rocks.
