Kurinsky District is the birthplace of the General Designer of Small Arms Mikhail Timofeevich Kalashnikov, twice Hero of Socialist Labor, laureate of the Stalin and Lenin Prizes, Hero of the Russian Federation, Knight of the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called.

The museum of the twice hero of socialist labor Mikhail Timofeevich Kalashnikov was opened in the regional center for the 90th anniversary of the designer. Prior to that, since 1993, a large exposition dedicated to the life and work of the gunsmith was housed in the Kurjinsky Museum of Local Lore.

M.T. Kalashnikov, the designer of the famous assault rifle, holder of many orders, including military ones, owner of a long list of all kinds of honorary awards and titles, was born and raised in the village of Kurya. Developed by him in the late 1940s. The AK-47 assault rifle, thanks to its simplicity, reliability and efficiency, laid the foundation for a whole family of small arms. For 60 years, the Kalashnikov weapon has been in service with the Russian army. The funds of the museum are constantly replenished, some of the exhibits were once donated by the designer himself.

In the village of Kurya, you can visit not only the memorial museum: on the site of the house where Kalashnikov's childhood passed, there is a memorial stone. And near the school where the future designer once studied, there is his bust.
