An educational institution with a 4-year term of study, intended for the Orthodox clergy. Opened in Barnaul in 1868, it was located in a building on Moskovsky Avenue (now Lenin Avenue). The architect of the theological school N. Shundal, the building is eclectic.

At first, subjects of the religious cycle and the so-called "dead" languages were taught - Latin, Ancient Greek. Then the content of the curriculum and programs changed significantly. So, in 1914, the pupils studied the law of God, Church Slavonic, Latin, Greek languages and general education disciplines: Russian language, history, arithmetic, geography, natural history, singing, calligraphy, music, bookbinding. The pedagogical work was carried out by the superintendent and teacher of the catechism State Councilor K.N. Levitsky, assistant superintendent and teacher of sacred history, collegiate assessor S.S.Bulygin, teacher of Russian and Church Slavonic languages, collegiate assessor A.A. Suslov and others.
