The building is located in the historical center of Barnaul.

The cultural heritage site is an example of an educational building, built under the influence of the traditions of the mass wooden urban architecture of Siberia in the second half of the 19th century.

The first women's gymnasium was opened in Barnaul in 1877. Before that, there were no educational institutions for girls in the city. The house for her was provided by the widow of the collegiate counselor, E.A. Preobrazhenskaya. In 1900, the gymnasium was transformed into a female gymnasium, which quickly became a popular educational institution in Barnaul and beyond.

A historic building from the 19th century was destroyed by fire. But it was reconstructed from the drawings rather close to the original.

In 1941-1945. hosted a hospital for the wounded on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War.

In 2011. the building has been restored to its original appearance on the site of a burned down building, built before the revolution.

The gymnasium is one of the objects of the excursion "Wooden lace of Barnaul".
